Since higher education primarily benefits individuals instead of society, some people claim that students should be responsible for covering all the associated expenses. While universities offer personal advantages, I firmly believe that students should not bear the full financial burden themselves, as tertiary education plays an immense role in fostering a well-rounded community.
-
Undeniably, university education provides individuals with different personal advantages. One of them is that students have considerably better learning opportunities compared to schools and other institutions, thanks to skilled professionals, cutting-edge technology, and other features such as libraries and a like-minded surrounding. A learning period wisely using such resources enhances students’ skills and expertise, making them superior to those who did not enroll in a university. Additionally, an eventually-acquired degree serves as a verified document that leads to better employment prospects and improved job security. For instance, software engineering graduates not only are competitive in the labor market, but also can obtain prestigious and lucrative positions, whereas those without such qualifications will struggle to access the same level of employment.
-
However, I would argue that the government should be accountable for covering students’ education, as society as a whole benefits from a well-educated population. Those university graduates filling skilled positions significantly help to drive the economy and contribute to overall success of the country. For example, fields such as medicine, teaching, and engineering are all crucial for maintenance and development of society, offering health care services, training the following generation, and promoting innovation. Another substantial impact of well-educated individuals on society is that they often lead to new advancements and solutions to societal problems, ranging from environmental to medical breakthroughs. Thus, students should receive state-funded investment in their education to ensure long-term prosperity and development of society.
-
In conclusion, although there are certain advantages of universities to individuals, society gains considerably as well. Therefore, to ensure fairness, I think that parliamentary financial support should be invested in students’ education rather than placing the entire responsibility on them.
