The bar graph shows how many skilled workers in four occupations migrated to Australia from 2009 to 2012. In general, most of the skilled employees who migrated were accountants, followed by software engineers and cooks, whereas the figures for cooks and software engineers declined. Despite some fluctuations, the numbers for most occupations eventually returned close to their initial levels, except computer programmers, whose figures rose overall.
-
The number of skilled accountants generally saw an upward trend, while the reverse scenario was true for cooks and software engineers. The figure for accountants started at 20,000 and reached a peak of 28,000 in the following year. Although the number dropped afterwards, accountants still remained the most common occupation among migrants in 2012, at 21,000. In contrast, 17,000 employees who migrated to Australia in 2009 were cooks. Their number experienced negligible oscillations in the ensuing years, with a drop of a thousand by 2012. Similarly, despite increasing consistently from an initial 19,000 to 21,000 by 2011, the number of software engineers ultimately decreased to 17,000.
-
However, the number of skilled computer programmers migrating to Australia bucked the trend. Specifically, the figure began with just 2,000 and doubled after a year, but fell back to its initial level in 2011. Despite such changes, it finally accounted for 5,000, indicating a relatively substantial growth overall.
