The bar graph compares the contribution of three sectors - agriculture, industry, and services - to the gross domestic product (GDP) of India in four decades, starting in 1960. Overall, despite accounting for the most substantial contribution to the country’s GDP in the initial decades, the agriculture sector eventually made up the lowest percentage; however, the reverse was true for the services sector, which became the most significant contributor. Meanwhile, the percentage contribution of the industry sector remained moderate, with slight changes over the period.
Main Body 1:
A staggering 63% of India’s GDP was contributed by agriculture in 1960. Despite remaining the major contributor in the ensuing two decades, its share had experienced a sixfold decline by 2000, meaning it was no longer the leading sector.
Main Body 2:
However, starting at around 17% in 1960, the services sector contributed to almost 30% of India’s GDP in 1980. Thereafter, its growth accelerated and had virtually doubled to more than 60% by 2000, constituting the highest contribution percentage.
Main Body 3:
The proportion of the contribution of the industry sector also followed the same trend, albeit less so. It increased slightly from an initial 15% to around 25% throughout twenty years and remained relatively stable until the end of the period, with its contribution being modest in the ultimate year.
