The line graph illustrates how many barrels of oil were consumed daily in total by four major regions—the USA, China, the Middle East, and Western Europe & Japan—from 2009 to 2030. Overall, oil consumption in the USA and Western Europe & Japan experienced a downward trend, while the opposite was reported in China and the Middle East, with the USA being a leading consumer during the entire period as well as in the future. Among all regions, only China is expected to have reversed its trend by the final year.

The USA consumed by far the most barrels of oil in total per day, starting at around 9 million. Despite peaking at 10 million in 2015, its consumption accounts for 8 million in the present year. It is estimated to show a further negligible decline in the ensuing five years. Western Europe, along with Japan, followed next, consuming virtually two times fewer barrels of oil every day, at 4 million. This regionʼs figure also decreased, reaching slightly more than 2 million in 2025. According to the future estimations, such a declining change will continue and amount to 2 million in 2030, making Western Europe, along with Japan, the least consumer among the four regions.

In contrast, although the total oil consumption in the Middle East and China made up the smallest amount of nearly the same 2 million barrels daily, it increased significantly and now constitutes approximately 2.5 and 4 million, respectively, surpassing Western Europe, along with Japan. As for the future years, it is projected that the Middle East will keep growing the amount of oil consumed to 3 million barrels per day, whereas a marginal drop of 0.5 million is anticipated in China.
