Today, TV channels show more menʼs sports than womenʼs sports. Why is this the case? Should TV channels give equal time for womenʼs sport and menʼs sport?

These days, menʼs sports are shown more than womenʼs on TV channels. This difference is
attributed to several factors, while I think that womenʼs sports should receive as much coverage as menʼs due to two major reasons.
-
The dominance of menʼs sports programs on TV channels is primarily because most varieties of sports games are widely associated with masculinity. This popularity thus causes a gap in the attention given to the two gendersʼ sports. For example, most types of sports, such as football, boxing, and power-lifting, are mainly made for men, making womenʼs games less shown in TV programs. Another factor contributing to such a disparity is that a relatively larger proportion of TV channel viewers are males. This encourages media managers to focus on commonly preferred choices. If they decide to show womenʼs sports, such as netball, which is not appealing to men, the reputation of those channels will be more likely to be lost, leading to fewer viewers.
-
However, I think it would be better for TV channels to devote equitable attention to both
menʼs and womenʼs sports. The first reason is that it can serve as a driving force for females to take up sports as a pastime, leading to increased physical activity levels. For instance, engaging in swimming for at least two hours weekly not only enhances womenʼs health, but also lowers their risk of cardiovascular diseases. Furthermore, placing equivalent emphasis on sports of both genders sparks enthusiasm in more women. This helps them to prevent them from giving up on their efforts to become a successful sportswoman. If women do not receive equal support as men do, they will most likely lose hope of fulfilling their dreams, assuming that their endeavors are not noticed and appreciated.
-
In conclusion, menʼs sports programs on TV are comparatively popular owing to a wider range of sports performed by men and a higher number of male viewers. Such reasons notwithstanding, I firmly believe that womenʼs sports deserve equal attention as gender equality offers health benefits and helps to remain motivated in the pursuit of their dreams.
